World Scholar’s Cup in Bangkok

Students from the High School participated in the World Scholar’s Cup competition in Bangkok, Thailand. The competition took place from August 30th to September 4th, 2024.

In total 38 students took part in the event which included debating, writing and the study on a broad range of academic subjects. This year, the theme of the competition was ‘Reimagining the Present’ and was attended by around 4000 students from across the globe. In their teams, students were tested on and debated topics ranging from the use of AI to artwork by Andy Warhol and Banksy.

SJIIS has an outstanding record in the competition and this year was no different with all of our students bringing home medals (and a wide variety of brightly coloured alpacas). In the Junior Division, Daniel (Y9), Ayleen (Y9) and Jin Yang (Y10) managed to secure third place overall team!

In addition to the academic rounds of the competition, students had great fun completing a scavenger hunt at a theme park in Bangkok. During the scavenger hunt, students complete a range of fun tasks working as part of a group with students from different schools and countries. We also attended ‘the Scholar’s Ball’ and even had time to visit an amazing branch of Kinokuniya at Siam Paragon Mall.

The students had an amazing experience and all qualified for the Tournament of Champions at Yale University in November.

Our Head of School, Mr Gary Cairns, who first introduced the World Scholar’s Cup at SJIIS way back in 2016 was also recognised for his contribution to the programme and his commitment to coaching our students. Mr Cairns was awarded ‘The Coach of the Decade’ so our congratulations to him too.
