Tournament of Champions 2024: World Scholar’s Cup

From November 14 to November 20, two Junior teams and one Senior team from our school participated in the World Scholar’s Cup Tournament of Champions (ToC) at Yale University. Competing among the best scholars from around the world, our students displayed extraordinary dedication, teamwork, and resilience in one of the most prestigious academic competitions.

 

The competition’s events—Team Debates, Collaborative Writing, the Scholar’s Challenge, and the Scholar’s Bowl—pushed participants to their intellectual limits. Amidst these challenges, our scholars also forged meaningful global connections and celebrated diversity through events like the Cultural Fair, Scholar’s Social, and Scholar’s Ball.

Senior Division Achievements The Senior team, comprising Tin, Dhineesh, and Owen, brought determination and enthusiasm to every event.

  • Tin’s creativity and sharp analytical thinking earned him the silver medal for the Asimov Award, celebrating innovation and intellectual curiosity.
  • Dhineesh and Owen displayed resilience and adaptability, securing the Barely Seniors Award as they competed in the Senior division despite being young enough for the Junior category. Their spirited performance demonstrated maturity and courage in stepping up to a higher level of competition.
  • Owen stood out in the Challenge Subject for Literature and Media and was awarded silver, demonstrating a deep understanding of these fields and receiving well-deserved recognition.

As a team, their camaraderie and commitment to excellence were evident throughout, paving the way for future success.

Junior Division Achievement

The Junior teams excelled across multiple categories, showcasing their talents and synergy:

  • Keito, Hillary, and Estelle: Silver in Team Debate and gold in both Team Bowl and Team Writing

Individual Writing Each Junior showcased unique strengths across diverse subject areas:
  • Hillary: Silver in a subject, reflecting her consistent dedication and precision.
  • Keito: Silver in a subject, demonstrating strong analytical ability.
  • Daniel: 1 silver and 1 gold, illustrating his broad knowledge and aptitude for problem-solving.
  • Ayleen: 2 gold medals, exemplifying her versatility and exceptional focus.
  • Jin Yang: 2 silver and 3 gold medals, highlighting his comprehensive understanding and academic breadth.
Medals Across Six Subjects
  • Ayleen earned a silver medal across all six subjects, showing her outstanding consistency and effort.
  • Jin Yang achieved gold medals across six subjects, underscoring his academic excellence and determination.

Champion Scholars and Southeast Asia Team Ayleen, Jin Yang, and Daniel: Ranked as the Top Southeast Asia Team (silver) and placed in the Top 50 Teams for the Team Countdown (ranked #26 globally).

Beyond the Competition While medals and awards mark their success, the ToC experience was about more than academic achievements. Students built lifelong friendships, celebrated diverse cultures, and grew personally and intellectually. From the intensity of debates to the joy of the Cultural Fair and Scholar’s Ball, our scholars embraced every moment with enthusiasm and an open mind.
