SJIIM students obtain outstanding IBDP results again

Students of St. Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia (SJIIM) once again surpassed all expectations by producing outstanding results in the recent 2019 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) examinations.

30% of our IBDP students obtained 40 points and above which should place them in the top 10% of worldwide results. SJIIM also achieved an overall average score of 37 points, far above the 2018 IBDP Global Average of 29.8 points and significantly higher than the 35.4 point average across Malaysian schools offering the IB Diploma Programme in 2018. Their stellar results are a fantastic achievement considering that this is only SJIIM’s second IBDP cohort.

The top IBDP scorer for SJIIM, Chong Ying Xuan, scored 44 points. She was pleased with her results and thanked her teachers for their support, “SJIIM combines the best of education and learning environment in a school with some of the most supportive and knowledgeable teachers in the IB world. It is truly a school that develops you not simply as a student, but also as a person who is acutely aware of their community and surroundings. It opened the doors to many opportunities for me that were both very new and exciting such as the World Scholar’s Cup, Pitstop Cafe Soup Kitchen and the Lasallian Youth Movement. Learning at SJIIM presents knowledge not simply as facts, but also as something to be examined, debated and criticised. This challenges us to seek a wider perspective beyond the constraints of a textbook.” For the next step of her education, Ying Xuan will be heading to the University of Warwick, UK for her BA in Law with Humanities.

SJIIM’s achievement resonates with the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme’s standing and it enjoys a very high level of respect and recognition among the world’s higher education institutions. For students, success in the IBDP often results in advanced standing, course credit, scholarships or other admissions-related benefits at top universities worldwide. Today, more than 5000 schools worldwide offer IB programmes.

Dr Nicola Brown, the High School Principal of SJIIM, had anticipated the good results and was very proud of their achievements. She added, “We are extremely proud of our students and their accomplishments in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme this year. The excellent results achieved are incredibly satisfying for the teachers and students and are a testimony to the hard work and dedication both have shown throughout the last two years. The students can now look forward to the next chapter of their lives in the many prestigious Higher Education institutions they have secured in around the world. We wish them well in their future endeavours.”

Maureen Fitzgerald, the IBDP Coordinator of SJIIM, was also beaming with pride at the performance of her charges. She further said, “When I saw the results for this year’s cohort, my first thought was how very proud of them I was and am. My pride is not due to the level of their results in comparison with other schools or in comparison with our own results last year. Instead, my pride is in relation to the growth that I see in each of those students. Every one of them has been touched by their experience with the IB Diploma Programme, has been stretched and has discovered new things about themselves. Some achieved really well by completing their diploma studies, others succeeded by learning to persevere, some did well in studying a subject that they do not have a natural aptitude for and others learned the pleasure in doing something for someone else and expecting nothing in return. Their grades that were published yesterday are a representation of this growth within themselves that they have experienced, and for that, I feel immense pride.”
