2023 Sixth Form Taster Day

On 13th June, our Year 10 students had the opportunity to experience our Sixth Form in a jam- packed day full of information and fun. They began the day speaking with SJIIM alumni who chose either the IBDP or A Levels as their Sixth Form curriculum. They asked important questions about how these students made choices post-IGCSE, and how they knew which curriculum was right for them.

After this opening session, students went on to five different “taster” sessions of their choosing. In these sessions, teachers explained the difference between their subject at IBDP vs. A level and engaged students in a typical Sixth Form lesson activity. They also provided a “Discovery List” of the types of books, podcasts, YouTube videos, and websites students can explore to learn more about the topics explored in their curriculum at Sixth Form. Students had a “Core” lesson, where they learned more about the research opportunities available to them through the International Project Qualification (the IPQ, available to A level students) or Extended Essay (the EE, required for IB students).

At tutor time, 11 of our successful scholarship students chatted about their application process, answering good questions about interview preparation and personal statement writing. The Year 10s then enjoyed off-campus lunch permission and were able to hang out in the Sixth Form lounge, which is a real privilege for our Sixth Form students.

Finally, students were able to meet with four different fantastic universities, including King’s College, the University of Exeter, the University of Sheffield, and the University of Melbourne. They also met with our alumni who are currently studying in the UK, Canada, and Australia during our Progression Marketplace.

We are sure that the students had much to think about and discuss after such an eventful day! We know the sessions were useful in preparing our students for the very important decisions they have regarding post-IGCSE options. We are so grateful that so many of our alumni were willing to come back and share their positive experiences!
